Are You Riding Legal?

Heather Bohnke - August 25, 2010

All Pennsylvania residents who operate personal watercraft within the state must be licensed through the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. You can take the Boating Safety Education course through a couple different online vendors to acquire your license. Go to the Pennsylvania Boat & Fish Commission website for more information. The online course takes approximately six hours to complete, but can take longer depending on how many quiz errors are made. Another option is to take the 8-hour live instructional class. Either option costs about $40.

Operators of personal watercraft must carry their licenses with them at all times while running their boats on Pennsylvania waters. We recommend purchasing a waterproof cylinder (in stock at Pittsburgh Watercraft) and keeping it in the boat. If you get your license online, you can print your temporary license right away and put it in the cylinder for immediate legal compliance.

Further, all operators must have these additional items on board their watercraft and within reach at all times:

• a fully-charged fire extinguisher and
• a noise-making device (such as a whistle)

Of course, all operators and passengers on personal watercraft in Pennsylvania must wear a non-inflatable life jacket.

The citation fees for failing to comply with these requirements are between $100-$120 per offense. See Title 30 of Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes.

We, at Pittsburgh Watercraft, want to make sure you are having a blast on the water and doing so legally. So, get your fire extinguishers and whistles at our shop! We can also order you a life vest that is just right for you.

Happy Boating!
